TYPOLOGY OF THE BAS-RELIEFS OF THE ABOMEY PLATEAU IN THE REPUBLIC OF BENIN

The bas-reliefs of the Abomey plateau are means of communication that date back centuries; they are part of a work of architecture that is part of the kingdom's heritage. In the past, kings used bas-reliefs to date great deeds and perpetuate everything that emerged from an endogenous truth; they were means of communication specific to them. Behind each bas-relief are hidden treasures because they are part of the means of symbolic representation of the sign of each sovereign through an animal or an object that embodies the power of the sovereign. Nowadays these bas-reliefs are built in all parts of the region, which allows for a varied range with different construction techniques that also rely on the use of different materials that are not often in harmony with the sustainable environment. When this aspect of sustainability is not taken into account, it risks leading to the disappearance of these bas-reliefs as well as the loss of the different roles they play. This article introduces the typology of the bas-reliefs of the Abomey plateau, along with the construction techniques that use different materials.
